I found this great idea from Mama Jenn and knowing how much my kiddos love to play with the little water droppers, knew we had to do it!

Supplies/Instructions:

  • Visit Mama Jenn’s blog and download the color mixing wheel.
  • Cardstock and lamination
  • Red, Yellow, Blue Food Coloring
  • Egg cartons for mixing colored water.
  • Toothpicks or other stirring object
  • Water droppers(you could use Tylenol droppers)
  • Paper Towels

Instructions:

  • Put some of each color food coloring into separate egg carton sections.
  • Dilute food coloring with water, keeping colors separate. Also give them clean water to rinse out dropper between colors.
  • Using dropper, have students place 1 drop of each color on the colored dots of the color mixing wheel. Obviously, making sure the colors they’re putting on match the ones on the template.
  • Note: Be sure to clean the dropper in a cup of water each time you switch colors. We didn’t and the colors were okay, but there were some yellows that were a tad greenish…

  • Once all drops are on template, use a toothpick to stir the colors together within each circle.
  • Carefully place paper towel onto the color wheel and allow it to soak up the colors!
  • Yipee, you made your very own color wheel!
  • Remind students what Primary and Secondary colors are, then discuss what colors were mixed to create the secondary colors.

Afterwards let them experiment, and in the words of my 5 year old “Mom, I just want to let loose with this now, and do whatever, just go crazy”.
