For our introduction to Geography lesson this week, we made a paper Mache’ globe.
Just to keep it real, this craft was VERY MESSY!

I highly recommend doing this outside if you can! Notice how we did it inside…now stop and pray for me that we’ll make it through this years arts and crafts without me losing my mind or my composure. Okay, moving on…

Supplies:

  • Balloon
  • Newspaper strips
  • Elmer’s glue (I used about 2 bottles!)
  • Mixing bowl for glue mixture
  • Paint
  • Sharpie

Directions:

STEP 1:  Mix 2 parts glue to 1 part water and stir well. Dip paper strips into water squeezing off extra glue with fingers. Next lay wet paper strip onto balloon until it is fully covered.

STEP 2: Hang balloon overnight to dry, leave paper towel underneath to catch drips of glue.

  1. I laughed out loud when I read your post because we too just started our globes last week, and of course it was SOOOO hot outside we worked on them inside and I kept having to pray I wouldn't lose my mind. Thank you for sharing- at least I know now I'm not the only one who struggles with messy craft syndrome!

  2. Love the Globe!! Just awesome! I was on the Hip Homeschool Mom's facebook page and there is a mom who says that she can't visit your website because her anti-virus is saying there is malware on your site. Just thought I would mention it to you. I just visited your site and nothing popped up for me though.

  3. I love this…. we aren't officially studying geography, but with all of our studies the kids have become obsessed with it… from Sonlight to Five in a Row we have so much opportunity to informally study geography, so I think we will make this globe next week. Thanks for sharing this great activity!

  4. Hey there,I am going to brave the paper mache next week. We are currently doing renovations so we are living in our camper right now, and it has been raining all week. I do hope the weather is nicer next week, or I may have to postpone the project since I really don't think I can handle the mess in such a small space. We'll see. Hey, I'm new at this homeschooling thing and was wondering if your children ever attempt a mutiny? From day one, with out even knowing what we would be doing, they declared in unison that they hate school and the have poo pooed on every activity and idea I've proposed for them to do. We're talking Kindergarten and preK here! I'd love to read a post on reluctant home-school students, if such a thing has ever happened in your home. I'm not being sarcastic, everything you post about looks so fun that I can't even imagine any child not jumping out of their beds and running to your school room, but I'm still learning and need all the tips I can get. Thanks for all that you share.Sincerely,EM

  5. I'm just now seeing this project. But I wanted to take the time to thank you for posting it. I have 2 daughters that are blind and I have struggled with how to help them understand the globe. Of course, I could purchase a tactile globe…but that is very expensive. However, this project is much more fun (and messy!).Thank you so much!Michelle K.
