Sweet Broccoli Salad Recipe

Well, I really should preface this recipe by saying it was NOT loved by all…except me…I ate almost the whole bowl…I know, not on my diet plan, don’t remind me! But in my defense, its deceptively healthy looking with all that broccoli!

That said, Sweet Broccoli Salad is apparently an acquired taste. And if my husband didn’t hate broccoli…and my kids didn’t hate onion…then maybe it would’ve gone over better, but I’m going to share this with you anyway for 2 reasons.

  1. Because its my blog and I can do what I want. Also because I have to come here to find my own recipes from time to time as they get lost in paper piles.
  2. Maybe…just maybe…there’s some of you out there who might find this tasty and I’d hate to take the risk of not sharing it! You can decide for yourself.

  • 1 ½ -2 lbs. of raw broccoli
  • 1 cup of craisins or raisins (I used craisins)
  • 1 cup cashews
  • ½ cup crumbled bacon bits
  • ½ cup chopped red onions (I did a little less here)

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • ½ cup sugar (just heads up, if your salt and sugar are in similar containers, MAKE SURE TO GRAB THE ONE WITH SUGAR in it!…don’t ask…)
  • 2 tsp. cider vinegar

Directions: Mix all the salad ingredients & refrigerate. Combine dressing ingredients and refrigerate about 30 minutes so sugar can dissolve. Mix both together just before serving.

I hope you enjoy this salad, its great to bring to a BBQ! And if not, well then…I don’t want to know ;o)

But if you do like it… make sure to leave a comment so I can show my husband that there are others out there like me. Who like Sweet Broccoli Salad. And are thankful for this recipe.

  1. I just made a very similar salad. Chopped pecans instead of cashews and green onions instead of red. On the dressing 4 tbsp of balsamic vinegar. Other than that everything else exactly the same!! Oh and I always use craisins too. 🙂 I love this salad and I don't typically like broccoli either!!

  2. Jim, Tori and the boys says:

Personally, I think that looks and sounds AMAZING and I'm definitely going to add it as part of our menu plan for next week. I've had broccoli salad but never with red onion or craisins.

  3. Glad to be reminded about a salad I LOVE!!! It has been a success for me at group meals–maybe you would have the same success outside of your family. Thanks for all the recipes you post!

I make this at home it has the same dressing igredients. I had never heard of the onions in it though which works good for me cause I hate onions! But we use sunflower seeds instead of the cashews but the cashews do sound good! My hubby and son love this also! My daughter doesn't hehe Can't win with every recipe! hehe

  6. This looks great. I want to thank you for printing 1/2 cup of bacon crumbled. We don't eat meat and a lot of recipes ask for so many strips of bacon without a conversion. I can't wait to try this! Thanks!

  7. One of my favorites!!!

  8. one of my FAVORITES! except we don't add cashews and we do add cauliflower…SOO GOOD..and yes, i can eat the whole thing by myself too…don't even get me started on the cottage cheese/orange jello "salad"…drool!

  16. I make that exact recipe except I use green onions instead of purple onions. My whole family loves it. Occasionally I add extra cashews and bacon but only for family parties.

  17. I love this salad! 🙂 I put cranberries and almonds instead of raisins and pecans 🙂 but will try it like this too! 🙂

  18. I make a salad very similar to this. I crumble slices of bacon in mine and shredded cheddar cheese, as well. My dressing doesn't have as much sugar, though. We call it Broccoli Sunshine Salad. =DIt's our favourite family salad!

  25. Try it with walnuts!!

  26. If you wanted to make this recipe a little more healthy, you could substitute plain greek yogurt for the mayo and honey in place of the sugar… it should taste pretty close to the same, but it will be much more healthy! Thanks for sharing!!!
