My Favorite M.A.C. Eye Shadows

Okay, you’re probably thinking you ventured onto the wrong blog, but you didn’t. It’s just that recently I’ve been feeling like sharing some of my favorite make up items.

So I did.

Or I am right now.

Today I’m talking about my absolute favorite eye shadows out there! Since College I’ve been a fan of M.A.C. cosmetics. Actually at one point I wanted to be a make-up artist…among many other things…none of which actually happened…but I digress…

Anyway, that career goal lead me to M.A.C. And it’s been consistently one of my favorite make-up lines since.

And NO, this is not a sponsored post, I just love these shadows!

One of the reasons I love M.A.C. eye shadows is for the color selection. They have just about every color you could ever want, no kidding, a literal plethora of colors. I also love that they have great color payoff meaning that I don’t have to put on a lot just to be able to see the color on my eyes. They also glide on very smoothly and blend together really well so you get a professional look even if you’re not a pro!

Now before you run out and buy a bunch of M.A.C. cosmetics, I just want you all to know that I’ve collected these over the years. They’re kind of expensive as far as eye shadow goes, they average $12 for the pro-palette ones and $15 for the individual pots.

That said, they really they last for quite awhile. most of these I’ve had for over a year, some maybe even longer Disappointed smile  I think you might be supposed to toss make-up after a certain date, but I love these, and haven’t noticed any decline in consistency or had any issues so I usually just keep them until they run out. Which is like…forever.

As you can see below, most of my colors are fairly neutral. I’m don’t get too crazy where make-up is concerned but if you’re curious….my favorite colors are listed below:

  • Top left to right: Nylon, Brule (use that daily), Naked Lunch, Dazzlelight, and Phloof!
  • Middle left to right: All that glitters, Woodwinked, Girlie, Satin Taupe, and Cork
  • Bottom left to right: Twinks, Sketch, Blackberry, Corduroy, and Handwritten

The best thing about M.A.C. is that you can go in and try on everything before you purchase it. That is a huge bonus since they’re a bit more pricey and colors tend to look different on everyone. They’ll also help you pick colors that are best for your skin tone and eye-color as well.

How I organize my shadows:

I don’ have a great method to my eye shadow palette organization, but for what it’s worth…I put my highlight colors along the top, eyelid colors in the middle row, then crease colors on the bottom. They’re also organized from top to bottom how I would put them together, so for example the column to the far left of the palette top to bottom could be worn together, except the far right column…those were just extras.

If that makes any sense at all.

Probably not.

Just do whatever works for you.

Starter Tips:

If you do want to start your M.A.C. collection, my absolute top three shadows I would start off with are Brule or Dazzlelight for highlight, then All That Glitters, and Twinks. The three together are a nice mix, if you want to just two I would skip All That Glitters, and blend Brule and Twinks. Here are some of my favs a little closer for you…

More to come?…I’ll share some of my other favorite makeup items in future posts…maybe…if you guys like it and I’m so inclined to do so.

Have a favorite make up to share? Feel free to leave a comment below!

Disclosure: This was not a sponsored post, and I am not affiliated with the company mentioned. Just love these products and felt like sharing, cuz’ it’s my blog and I can if I want to.

  1. “cuz’ it’s my blog and I can if I want to” LOL That made me giggle. I’ve never tried MAC but have been tempted to lately. I love Bare Escentuals –! I love these posts…but i’m kind of a girly girl so…. 🙂

  2. I’ve always loved MAC…their eyeshadows and pigments are SO rich in color. My favorite pigment was goldenaire….gotta love having little ones, my 2 year old spilled that limited edition pigment ALL over the bathroom floor! *sigh*

    Great post! 🙂

  3. LOVE MAC SHADOWS! I love all MAC… MAC brushes are my FAVORITE but shadows are AMAZING! Did you know you can get on there website for constant free shipping! This works great when you have the littles and can’t make it to the MAC counter and just realized you are running short on the favorite colors. 🙂

    Enjoyed your post,

  4. Thank you for this makeup information. I’ve never been into makeup but this appeals to me. Maybe I’ll give it a try.

  5. Love your “favorite makeup” posts! I am kind of a product junkie myself so I get it! (hair stylist turned stay-at-home Mom/homeschooler, goes with the territory I guess!) in case you haven’t ever tried their cream blush (Mac), I love that too. Particularly the “lady blush” color, it’s a perfect rosy pink. I have had that forever, hopefully they still make that shade. Anyway, I’ve never commented on your blog before but I love your suggestions and ideas. Thanks for sharing! One more thing…if you’ve never tried Essie nail color, give it a try, I actually like that more than OPI! See ya! 🙂

  6. I was a MAC fan long before I began homeschooling too. These posts are fun to mix it up sometimes. 🙂

I’ll give you my favorite MAC colors for you to check out next time you go to the store.

I use Painterly paint pot as a base and Orb eyeshadow all over my lid every time. Then I usually highlight with Phloof or Naked lunch. Now onto the fun colors.

My go-to black for crease or to use over liner is Carbon.

For my every-day look, I love, love, love Satin Taupe.

For a beautiful burgundy, that is beautiful with blue eyes, I use Cranberry.

If your eyes change from blue to green (or if they are just green) these are the shadows that help bring the green out: Trax all over and Shadowy Lady in the crease.

Then my all-time classic look is Saddle all over and Embark for the crease. That is what I had on for my wedding and I still wear it all the time.

Oh and check out Z palettes. They are awesome, because you can put any shaped or sized makeup in the empty palette. I have 14 eye shadows and 4 blushes in one palette. Let me know if you try any of the colors. 🙂

    Hi Erica,
Loved your MAC post!! Thanks for sharing. Love your color choices, those are some of my favorites as well.
Along with being a homeschooling mom I am a freelance Makeup Artist as well. Love MAC shadows but have an addiction to their lip glosses haha. 2 of my absolute favorite glosses from MAC are Ample Pink and Nymphette. Love reading your posts! Sending hugs.

  8. Danielle Wilson says:

I love it Erica!!! Thanks for sharing this:) How do you handle fallout under the eye? Driving me crazy b/c I look like I have dark circles under my eyes from it.

  9. Well if you are gonna do shadow.. you have to do Mascara! These posts are fun. They inspire me to get out of my 24 hour outfit which usually involves a pair of yoga pants… Its nice to hear what other people use.. I can’t tell you how many times I have bought something thinking I would love it then get it home and be like..ugh… I think its hard to know where to start with make up too… Thanks! Have a great weekend!

I am curious to know if any of you M.A.C lovers have ever tried Mary Kay’s mineral eye colors. If you haven’t tried them I would love to get your opinion on them and have you compare them to M.A.C. I have some free samples that I am willing to send you in exchange for your opinion. I personally have not tried M.A.C. before put I have tried a little of Bare Essentials and Sephora. I like great quality but I love saving money more. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing! I love this blog family and am so encouraged each day!

I just love these little Friday “bonus” days. I love learning about new products and tip and tricks. I tried your Revlon base and top coat…..because I love having my nails painted but felt like they only look nice for about 1/2 a day. And now I am on day 4 and still no chips–which might be a new world record. Thanks for these. And I love M.A.C. I stumbled on to their eye shadow about 3 years ago and Love how it looks. And I still have the pots I bought them. I won’t tell if you don’t–I am like you and keep makeup way pasted what everyone reccomends. But if it still works why not use it.

  12. I love MAC! I use almost everything from MAC, and yes it can be pricey, but like you mentioned, it lasts for a long time. I just went back to the store to purchase an eyeshadow that I ran out of and they didn’t have it anymore. I was disappointed because I loved it, but they usually have something similar to replace it. Then when I thought about it, I bought that shadow about 2 years ago! granted I didnt where it everyday, but when I did wear make up I used it. So then I wasn’t so disappointed because it made me realize that much more how I appreciate and love their products. They last forever and even though I had that shadow a couple years, it never changed consistency or the way it went on, it was always like when I first got it.

  13. I am loving these posts as they remind me to put a little woman into the mix instead of always being homeschool momma. You should see my nails right now! 🙂

  14. I would recommend going to ULTA. You can try all kinds of shadows there as well. Urban Decay’s naked palettes and Too Face are some of my favorites.

  15. I LOVE Mac too! I use Naked Lunch as my foundation and then I use the malt on top. I like it really neutral:). I love that you blogged about this! I will look at your colors as well! I love, love, love their eyeliner as well! Fun!

  16. Love MAC! My sisters introduced it to me when I was pregnant with my first and found out I was having a girl. I freaked because I’m not a girly girl and I was having a girl and I didn’t even know how to apply makeup! Pregnant lady train of thoughts are so funny! But I fell in love with MAC – and a few other girly things. I fly pretty neutral though. Love MACs Shroom as highlight and Naked Lunch as well. Adore all colors you had together! Thanks for a fun, girly post. 🙂

  17. Love MAC. Love to see more

  18. I just read through the comments as I am looking at my polished nails! Glad to see I am not the only one enjoying my nail polish! Thanks Erica!

  19. I usually don’t wear makeup. I never really did, because my mom wouldn’t let me when I tried as a child. Now that I’m over 40 with 7 young children, I have been looking for a lil spice, so recently I tried my hand at makeup. I have no idea how to apply it, but it is fun. LOL. I have heard GREAT things about M.A.C. makeup. I plan on trying it. THANKS for this fun post.

    • Angi, if I may be so bold, YouTube offers some great videos about properly applying makeup!

I remember my mom used to joke about “adding some paint to the old barn”
Which was funny, because in reality she was a youthful, gracious lady with the ‘art’ of applying makeup to ‘enhance the beauty already there’ without it looking like ‘paint’.;)

  20. I’m loving these “Friday Favorites!!” I am curious as to what you use for skin care, cleansing and such. You seem to have great skin! Thanks Erica, I always love getting your posts in my emails! They are a highlight to my day!

  21. Love your website … It has been a huge help to organizing my homeschool and getting started! Love your consequences chart idea too. I really enjoy the fashion/make-up articles. I love hearing what real people use. Having a girl after my 2 boys has brought the girly-girl side of me out and now I want to go experiment with MAC Eyeshadows! I’ve used their face powder with great results. I second the skin care routine … love hearing what people use and if they like it. I’m using naturopathika right now for my skin care. Used caudelle (samples) before, liked it a lot but even more expensive. Have thought about Ole H. before and might try Jenuinely Pure. I tend to stay more natural these days with the skin care items, but have used drugstore before.

  22. Your post reminded me of a friend of mine who has a blog about nothing but make up. I love how pretty make up is…but never wear it. I can’t manage to make myself put the time into it. Thanks for being a little out of the box today in your posts, I happened to find your blog one day and send it to our mentor teacher frequently (we use a charter school that was considered a home school based, but..) so thank you for all you do to help everyone else.

  23. Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful posts that remind us mommies we are important and need to take care of ourselves too! I LOVE M.A.C. and can’t wait to try some of your favorite colors. Plus, I too went out and got the Revlon base and top coat. Love them! On day 7 with no chips! It had been forever since I took the time to do my nails. You’ve inspired me to not forget me in the midst of taking care of these precious kiddos. Thanks!

  24. nice, don’t know anything about the M.A.C. line, but the clours look lovely 🙂

I’m a HUGE fan of “100% Pure”. LOVE that it’s NOT full of stuff that most main-lines are full of that can mess up our Mommy hormones!! (like parabens for example).

Would you do an updated makeup list? I know this is a homeschool blog but many of us homeschool moms are girly and love makeup too 🙂
