Its been ridiculously cold here lately, and with cabin fever setting in, kids running through the house screaming, I knew I had to do something…something drastic, something completely out of my comfort zone… I’ve seen this on several blogs and I apologize at this point, I don’t remember where! But I grabbed our workboxes, went outside, whined because it was cold, and filled the boxes with snow!

I had the kids grab some of our plastic toy, cups and spoons, and said “Have at it ankle biters!” They gave me a weird look, but then realized that I’d just given them permission to play with snow…INSIDE!

This may have been one of the best ideas I’ve tried all year! They played quietly until all the snow had melted, about 30-45min, I’m not sure as I was blogging ;o)

And here’s the best part, there was literally NO cleanup. Just a couple drops of water on the floor and that was it! So for all you who’ve posted this idea on your blogs, I say THANK YOU from the bottom of my ‘seriously in need of a break’ heart!

  1. I KNOW! We did this awhile ago on a very cold day and it kept my 2 occupied for 1 1/2 hours! If you get really daring-add food coloring next time. We got out bowls and they were fascinated with transferring the water/snow back and then the color…awesome!

  2. I did this with my 19 month old when we were snowed in and going stir crazy for about 2 weeks. We woke up this morning and we are snowed in once again, looks like when we begin to have a meltdown I will set this up. I gave her a spoon and bowl full, but I am going to try the tub and bath toys this time!!! Glad you got your much needed break 🙂
