Monthly Meal Plan: May 2011
Oh my, can you believe it’s already May? I really don’t know where the year has gone, but I do know that we’re almost out for summer! Yipee! I’m totally ready for a break! Yes, I take summer’s off to relax, re-group and get things ready for next year. Also, if I didn’t take a break I think I’d be sent away to a padded room. So that means it’s time for an updated meal plan! I’m hoping to add some yummy summer recipes soon, but didn’t quite get to it in time for this month. So look for those in June! TOS Review: Latin’s Not So Tough
This week I reviewed Latin’s Not So Tough from www.greeknstuff.com. Latin’s Not So Tough is a Classical Latin Curriculum designed for young learners. We received level 2, but they have levels 1-6 available. The beginning levels start mostly with vocabulary lessons. Once you get to Level 3 you start with simple sentences, then all the way to Level 6 where you are writing and translating. What’s the Cost? Each level is different, but the full set for Level 2 is $51.40. It comes with a Student Workbook, Answers Key, Full Text, Quizzes/Exams, Flashcards on a ring, Pronunciation CD or Cassette, and Classical Alphabet Books. Homemade Calzones
One of our favorite meals are homemade Calzones! I wanted to share this easy recipe with you too since I am asked for it weekly. I think my son would eat it every day if he could! These are so easy, you probably have the ingredients already! So go ahead, make ‘em tonight, your family will rejoice! Ingredients: 1 loaf Rhode’s Frozen Bread Dough (You can also use homemade pizza dough, or even Pillsbury Pizza Dough!) 1 Jar of your favorite Marinara Sauce (I make my own usually, but when in a hurry we use Barilla Tomato & Basil) Mozzarella Cheese, shredded Toppings: Canadian Bacon, Pepperoni, Mushrooms, Browned Sausage, Black Olives, Green Bell Peppers, Onions, etc. Directions: Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Step 2: Follow dough thawing instructions or make your own. If you use Rhode’s Frozen dough, place frozen dough in greased bowl and cover with a towel or greased plastic wrap. What’s in the Box Wednesday: First Grade
Welcome to What’s in the Box Wednesday! I’ve been trying to get back to adding in fun things to our workboxes lately! With the end of our year in sight, I’ve been slacking a little, but the kids notice and have requested more fun things. These were our first grade boxes for today: Abeka Reading Abeka Letters and Sounds Tape Measure It: This is a favorite! I give my son a tape measure, and a chart of objects for him to find and measure. He records the length of each object. On page 2 of the printout, he charts the objects based on length then lets me know which one was longest and shortest. Princess Preschool Activities
I’m a contributing writer for Totally Tots Blog, and since this month’s theme was Princesses, I couldn’t resist creating some of my Letter of the Week activities to go with the Princess Theme! Bible Verse: “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14 Numerical Order Puzzle: This is a new item added to my K4 Curriculum! Simply cut out each strip of the puzzle, then arrange in numerical order to complete! Princess Reading: Do Princesses wear Hiking Boots? by Carmela LaVigna Coyle (See bottom of post for more books by Carmela LaVigna Coyle) This cute book portrays a young lady asking her mom questions about what it means to be a princess. It’s a rhyming book full of whimsical questions and answers, concluding with the question and answer “Do princesses look at all like me?” and the mom responds “Look inside yourself and see…” Outside Activity: Go take a hike! Loving Living Math Review & Giveaway
Hi everyone! I’m so excited to review Loving Living Math by Cindy West for you today! I listened to Cindy’s session at the last HOTM Online conference and immediately wanted to add some living math into our homeschool days! What is Living Math? Living Math is simply introducing math to your students using real-life situations. It is typically hands-on, fun, and can include anything from board games, cooking, logic games, and more! Cindy suggests using your standard math text book 3 days a week, then using fun living math lessons 2 days a week. I haven’t quite gotten that far yet, but I am planning to implement these lessons next year. I am currently planning to do 4 days of text book math, then one day of fun Living Math. What’s Included?
