I have to admit that my children still like Bisquick better, but in an attempt to be slightly more healthy we make these instead. They are pretty good and I feel a little better about eating them!



  • 1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 Tbsp sugar (Can substitute 1 Tbsp honey)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Optional: 1/4 c your favorite ingredient. Some ideas we like: white chocolate chips, blue berries, strawberries.

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and cook on flat skillet until browned on both sides. Top with a pat of butter and Agave Nectar.

Makes about 14 small pancakes, see above photo.

I use Agave Nectar from Mudhava instead of syrup. Agave is a natural liquid sweetener made from the extract of the wild agave. It can be pricey, so I buy bulk and just refill the little container!

Note: You can make extras of this and freeze them in a Gallon Ziploc freezer bag. Just thaw before ready to eat, and re-heat in your toaster!


  1. Ooohhh, we made whole wheat pancakes here too. But, our recipe is a bit different. Perhaps I will get around to sharing it one day. we also use and love Agave Nectar. We can find it at our local Costco, but I should look into purchasing it in bulk!So funny you mentioned freezing them. I just got a deep freezer at a garage sale {I am SO LOVING IT!!!} and I was planning to make up a bunch of pancakes as well as bread to freeze for now and thaw for later! 🙂

I will try it on pancakes. I am working so hard on making my kids eat healthier diets. Its not so easy though when their taste buds are already programmed!!

  4. I'm with you, I like the natural ones, but my kids prefer the mixes. We go back and forth on what we serve, but we DO have pancakes every Saturday morning – it's tradition. The Agave Nectar is delicious – we all love it too.Great post!

  5. Okay…not that you asked but here's our favorite recipe. Originally titled "Fluffy Pancakes"We use 1/2 ww flour and 1/2 white but can be changed to all ww of course1/2 cup ww flour1/2 cup white flour2 teaspoons baking powder1/2 teaspoon salt1 tablespoon sugar1/4 cup oil3/4 cup milk1 eggsplash of vanillaMix dry ingredients. Mix wet ingredients and add to dry. Stir. Cook. Makes 6-8 large fluffy pancakes.One tip that I have to save on dishes is… in a big enough measuring cup, such as a 2 cup pyrex, measure 1/4 cup oil, fill milk to make 1 cup, put in egg and beat slightly, add vanilla. I haven't used a mix for years and my kids love these. It's a good base to add things too…we try to do healthier things like blueberries but sometimes choc. chips or sprinkles.BTW…would love to read more about agave nectar if you have any tips. I have some but have only used in tea. Thanks!
