Hi everyone! As most of you know we are trying out a new English/Grammar curriculum this year and I’ve had several requests to do a review of that for you. We’ve been using Fix It! Grammar now for about 6 weeks and so far I really like it. I also have a giveaway for you so make sure to read all the way to the end!

We are starting with the Fix It! Grammar Level 1 book, The Nose Tree with my 5th, 7th, and 8th graders this year. Now I do want to say that this level is a little too easy for them right now, but I’ve looked ahead and it does pick up in difficulty as the year progresses. But the main reason I wanted to start off with the first book is because it’s a new curriculum for us. I did look at other levels and some of the terms used were not familiar to me, and so I just thought it would be more effective to start fresh with level 1. That way we can learn how it works as well as any new terms etc. And let’s face it, when it comes to things like English everyone can use more review right!

So let’s take a closer look at the curriculum itself! Watch this week’s Tip Tuesday: Fix It! Grammar Review here!

The Teacher’s Manual is currently only available as a hardcopy. However when you purchase the student materials it also comes with a PDF download which you can use to print extra copies for additional students if you don’t want to purchase extra student copies for multiple kiddos.

What I like about Fix It! Grammar:

  • It takes less time, about 15 minutes per day.
  • It includes vocabulary.
  • I like that we’re learning to edit a continuing story line.
  • Story is interesting and kids are excited to see what happens next.
  • It correlates well with the IEW Writing program.
  • Helps reinforce proper paragraph formation, writing structure, etc.
  • Teacher’s manual is easy to read and concepts are clear and concise.
  • Love the extra teacher notes, so far any questions the kids have asked have been listed in the teacher notes which is great!
  • Like the easy reference flash-cards.
  • Cost is great!

What I don’t like about Fix It! Grammar:

So far there isn’t anything I don’t like about it, but I’ll do a future review once we’ve had a better chance to use the program.

  1. We love IEW and Fix It! Grammar! I’ve been amazed at how editing has helped my kids (4th, 6th, and 7th grades) understand the grammar better than simply doing workbooks.

Also, in your giveaway grid, the 2nd question asks for us to comment about our favorite sewing notion after visiting the IEW site.

  2. I love that they can use the new skills they just learned right away. It also sounds like the levels build upon each other learning a new concept which each one. That way not a ton of different information isn’t being thrown at them in one sitting. It seems like a good way for a child to learn these maybe not so fun skill. At least for my child 😉

  3. We’ve used Fix It Grammar in the past and loved it! I would love to purchase the 2-4 books for my daughter or Phonetic Zoo Level C (another program she enjoys using). We LOVE that vocabulary and grammar are taught contextually in this program. She is expanding her vocabulary knowledge and learning so much! She immediately corrects errors in short sentences and can apply that grammar knowledge to her own writing on a daily basis. My daughter’s favorite part is that it tells a story. Last year she decided to draw illustrations for one of the books. Another reason why I love Fix It Grammar is that the lessons are short.

  4. We just started Week 3 in the 2nd Fix It book this year. It starts out at a much quicker pace with several corrections added each week that are review from the first book. I had tried two other grammar programs and really didn’t have good results at all. The kids found it confusing and the concepts didn’t cross over for them into their own writing. I can’t even express how delighted I’ve been with this program. It’s gentle, but very effective and as the parent it is much easier to teach.

  5. We adore IEW Fix It! Grammar. The lessons are quick but educational and interesting. I love that Fix it Grammar follows along with IEW writing lessons so if you are using IEW a lot of the terms aren’t strange but just reinforce the writing lessons. It’s a win in our house.

  6. We have been using fix it grammar for the last couple of years and my kids love it! They race to see who can find everything first. I have used other grammar programs in the past and this one is simple to use, but my kids have learned so much. I love that they relate what they have learned in their IEW writing with their grammar lessons. Happy you are all enjoying it:-)
