I know with school nearing a close for many of you, you’re wondering what you’re going to do so your kiddos don’t forget all those precious tidbits you so carefully lodged in their brains over the course of the year. While I don’t plan anything super hard core for summer (we all need a break, me included!) I do keep the kids reading over the summer, mostly fun books. They get to pick what they want to read and as long as it’s appropriate for them, that’s fine.
Just to keep all of the other subjects fresh in their minds, we also do some activities out of the Carson Dellosa Summer Bridge activity books! They’re literally ZERO planning on my part, and great for keeping kids skills fresh over the summer.
Keeping up with your students reading, math, and other basic skills over the long summer break is important. I’m not sure if this happens to your kids, but it seems like a few weeks after school is out my kids seem to forget everything they’ve learned the previous year.
Depending on the day, I usually have the kids are do 1 lesson per day out of their workbook. I don’t usually force the issue too much, there tends to be a time each day where they start getting bored, and the Summer Bridge activities are the perfect solution! The great thing about them, is that they’re colorful and fun, so it’s not hard to get them to do a page or two.
Just to make it a little more fun, we use our Educational Insights Smens pens to make it a little bit more fun. They LOVE IT!
And I kid you not, one of them said “Wow, this is so much more fun than regular school!” and the other came up later in the day and actually asked me if she could do some school in her new workbook! Are you serious? YEAH!

We school year-round, taking off a week every month instead of a long summer. That’s how we prevent the memory loss that inevitably occurs when kids take a whole summer off! My oldest has ADHD, so we have always done it this way for just that reason. He focuses better with a predictable schedule. If I took the whole summer off, it would take most of the school year to get him into the new routine once school started again.
I’d love to win this for my daughter especially! She is a workbook addict. Thanks for the opportunity!
I like to have the kids do worksheets every once in a while during the week. We also do various read alouds like historical fiction or biographies. This summer we decided to start learning Greek.
I subscribe via email.
We just started preschool homeschool with my son last year, so this is still pretty new to us. But, I do have some fun worksheet pages that I plan on incorporating into our summer fun schedule to help him remember what he’s learned. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
I “liked” Carson-Dellosa on Facebook. Thanks.
If I won this, I would give it to my daughter to use with my grandson. They are homeschooling, and they would have fun with this! I’m sure it would help to reinforce what he’s learned and help him to remember throughout the summer. 🙂
In the summer with my preschooler we like to work on a letter a week…but I try to find fun things that we can do outside to keep her busy. For example the letter A we did Art…I bought paint in the primary colors, white, and black, put each color on a plate and let her go crazy mixing colors and painting on a piece of plywood. Another day we made our own playdough and made scultures. We also talked about other forms of art and had lots of fun making up our own art projects. Letter B we did Bubbles and experimented with making our own bubbles and bubble blowers. and Letter C we did caterpillars and are currently watching our caterpillars in a butteryfly house!!!
She loves work books and these look like they’ll keep her busy for hours!!!
I was just looking at these the other day!! What an amazing give away!!
We “do school” right on through the summer and take our “summer break” at other busy times during the year. We live in Florida so the summer is the one time of year that is great for staying indoors and in the air conditioning!
I would love to win this for my son! He is already complaining about being bored since we finished up school. This would definitely be something fun for him!!
