Hi everyone! I have an exciting post for you all today! I’m going to start a new series of curriculum reviews on my YouTube channel.  I think that sometimes its just nicer to see curriculum in person (a.k.a. video) rather than trying to figure out what it looks like online, or via photographs.

I thought it might be helpful to show you how we use it, prepare it, store it, set it up, and things like that. I’ll also include what materials I recommend that you purchase when using the curriculum, and what supplies I think are optional. Remember these are just my opinions, and what I’ve found work best for us. Of course you’ll want to do what’s best for your family.

I want to start off by saying that these are not sponsored posts, I really just wanted to try and give you all a better look at the curriculum that we use.

So let’s get started!

Today’s video review is all about our well loved Math U See curriculum. As most of you know, I’ve used Math-U-See for several years now. We did venture out and try a couple other programs, however we found that Math-U-See seems to work best with our learning style.

Another cool thing about Math U See is that Homeschool Planet has pre-made lesson plans for Math U See curriculum, so you can just add it into your planner instantly!

Supplies mentioned in this video:

I apologize that the video ended up kind of long! I wanted to be thorough and give you as much information as I could without boring you to death!

By the way…you know you’re a homeschooler when…you are willing to watch a 20 minute video on math curriculum LOL!

I hope you enjoy this series, and I’ll see you next time with another fun curriculum review!

  1. I am excited for this series! I really enjoyed the video. We are using Right Start Math and I have always toyed with the idea of switching to math u see. Thanks of the information : ) I can’t wait to see a video on your writing curriculum set up. Once again thank you for all of your homeschool support!

  2. Thank you so much for this review! We are currently in 2nd grade using the A Beka curriculum. My daughter quite often seems bored with it and often frustrated because of the redundant paper work. I have made adjustments in what I cover and actually have her do because of this. It’s an expensive curriculum to not use all of it but she doesn’t need all of it. I was considering Math U See but wanted to see it before I bought so we wouldn’t have another curriculum that wasn’t suited to her learning style. This was great! Do you think we could transition into Math U See without starting at the beginning?

    1. Hi Melonie,
Yes, you’ll probably be fine to transition into MUS. you’ll have to do a intro to the block system quickly, but I’m sure she’ll pick it up quickly :o) They also offer placement tests on their website which will help you determine where to begin.

  3. Thank you SO much! We are just in the process of deciding curriculum and it was so helpful for me to see what it looks like and also know how you implement it. I love the video format and look forward to seeing more in the future!

  4. Thank you so much for doing the video on MUS. I have a 6th grader, 4th grader and Kindergartener. My oldest is doing Saxon 76 this year. My middle was doing Saxon 54 but got really bored with it and just worked on this multiplication workbook that Is mastery. She has been doing that only. My littlest one is doing a combination of Abeka’s K5 and first grade math. With all that being said… Where does I start with the 6th grader for next year? I probably need to have them take the placement tests, but I was just wondering what you think! I would do alpha with my littlest one… But wonder too if my middle child should just move on to division or do multiplication again?

    Thank you so much!

  5. Erica, I really appreciate this video review. I also like that you mention the mastery concept as I believe that is very helpful for subjects like math. We’re currently using Singapore Math but I feel like it’s hard to explain certain concepts to them. This also looks good for tactile learners. I’ll prayerful consider this for next year. Thanks so much for taking the time. 🙂

  6. thank you for taking the time to create this video. This is very helpful and thorough review of the Math U See program. It helped me to decide if I was ready to switch. The manipulatives are great. I appreciate everything you do on your website! it’s so helpful for first-year homeschoolers! I love the variety on your website! You make it look so easy! I don’t know how you have the time to do all that you do but it looks so fun! Thank you!

  7. So if a child is starting first grade will the primer set them back a year in math? Not really set them back but will they be behind what most 1st graders are learning. That would be a big concern for me…if we were to come across a situation where homeschool doesn’t work out would my child be a year behind starting with primer and then once in second grade then would be using the next one up that would normally be used for first grade?

    1. Hi Heidi,
If you’re starting in first grade I would probably just start with the Alpha unit, you’ll just need to introduce the blocks quickly. But I wouldn’t start with primer (kindergarten). MUS also has placement tests you can take on their website to help you decide where to start.
